Blue collar jobs are in high demand in Canada. They also present a great opportunity for immigrants who want to become Permanent Residents of the country.

There’s a general belief that only white collar jobs pay well but there are quite a number of blue collar jobs that offer decent salaries especially due to the high demand and level of skill required.

Canada has quite a few high-demand blue collar jobs. Here are five of them:

1. Drivers

There’s a high demand for truck drivers in Canada. There are nearly 20,000 vacant truck driver positions in Canada and 61% of employers report they can’t find all the drivers they need. Almost every province has vacancies for truck drivers and according to reports by Trucking HR, Canada will have a shortage of 25,000 truck drivers by 2023. The average salary for this category ranges from $55,000 to $70,000.

2. Welders

Welding is another one of the blue collar jobs that are currently in demand in Canada. There has been a decline in the number of welders entering the workforce and qualified individuals are needed to take up vacant positions. Welders in Canada can earn up to $69,420.

3. Electricians

Skilled electricians are in demand across Canada and most employers only require high school/secondary school education for this job. Other certifications might also be required depending on the particular employer or province in question. The average salary of electricians in Canada is $56,595.

4. Mechanics

Qualified mechanics can earn up to $94,103 annually in Canada. Heavy-duty mechanics are also considered to be highly-skilled workers who can immigrate through the Express Entry and Provincial Nominee Programs. Some provinces that are in need of mechanics are Manitoba, Ontario, Yukon and Quebec.

5. Plumbers

Plumbers are in high demand in most of Canada’s provinces. That means an endless supply of jobs and the option to live in almost any province of your choice. The average salary is $65,072 but experienced plumbers can earn up to $97,500.
